A research report on gender-based violence in Ekurhuleni has revealed that Tembisa has the highest cases of violence against women at 64%.

It is followed by Vosloorus and Katlehong at 57 and 50% respectively.

The report was launched in Wattville Township, south of Benoni in Ekurhuleni, to mark National Women's Month.

An extensive social audit was conducted based on the prevalence of gender-based violence in the city.

Member of the Mayoral Committee on Community Services Dora Mlambo says the report compels the city to pay more attention to women's issues.

“South Africa's rate of rape as a particular form of gender based violence has been found to be one of the highest in the world. As the city that is growing it's economy we simply cannot afford gender based violence. Each day violence stops a girl from going to school and prevents a women from taking a job compromising their future and economic and social development of their communities. Gender based violence is an enemy of progress in every way.”
